“Will die of a heart attack at age 36. Just be ready. It’s TERRIBLE what you promote to young people” – Shaun via Twitter

“Terrible. She is not a plus size model, she is a model for obesity… “– IZ Da Good via The New York Times

Tess Munster is not oblivious to the world around her. She never was. She has heard the criticism. He has heard that she has a beautiful face. “If only” was her barrier to being beautiful.

If only Tess lost weight.
If only Tess were taller.
If only Tess tried harder.

As a teenager in Mississippi, she heard many people tell her that she was not pretty enough, skinny enough or tall enough to be a model. She heard negativity when she auditioned to be a plus-size model at 15.

“They should hire her to model Michelin tires. Plus-size is just putting it lightly – or heavily, depends on whether she’s standing on a scale or not.” Elvin via New York Daily News

She still hears the negativity like she did when she was in high school. She heard the negativity when she dropped out of school and moved to the West Coast for a dream.

In Seattle, WA, Tess was a successful makeup artist and hair stylist. She made others around her beautiful. Tess felt like something was missing. She knew deep down that she was a model. No one agreed.

No one except Tess

Here is a woman who was under five-foot-six and wore size 22 clothing. Most models did not even come close to those numbers. In fact, most plus size models wear size 16-18 and are over five-foot-eight.

So she packed her bags and moved to Los Angeles.

In LA, Tess became the face of a reality show called Heavy. Her picture was everywhere. She started to get noticed. She began to do photo shoots for major magazines. She started to model. Not only model, but she wanted to help other girls who might not fit the “normal” beauty standards, which is why the hashtag #effyourbeautystandards has over 60,000 shares on Instagram.

Here is a woman who was told she was too short and too fat.

So the “short and fat” woman started to model. People began to notice.

“It is so easy to judge her. I have followed her for a while. She works out four days a week. But yeah, keep on calling her lazy”- Rachel via Sydney Herald

Recently Tess Munster because the first woman of her size to sign with a major modeling agency. Very few women who weigh over 250 pounds get signed to a major modeling contract. In fact, I know one…

Tess Munster.

Of course, the Internet is abuzz about it. There is support and, of course, there is criticism.

There is a lot of criticism. Most of it is negative.

Some people do not find Tess Munster attractive. That is understandable since there are some persons who do not find Brooklyn Decker or Tyra Banks attractive. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but people still feel there is only one type of beautiful.

Some people would think Tess promotes obesity. As someone who battles obesity lets just clear up the fact that obesity is not contagious. No one supports gaining weight, and few would believe they would be happier if they were heavier.

Obese people do not promote obesity. They are just allowed to be happy at their size.

Some people might think that is Tess can become a model anyone can. Well, I feel that comment diminished everything Tess did, and I do not believe that anyone can be a contracted model…No matter their size. It is a robust industry.

Here is a woman that was told she could never be a model. She was not tall enough. She was not thin enough. She has a lot of tattoos and she has a nose ring.

She did not agree. She worked hard. She has a following, and she refuses to let the world tell her what she could not do. She refused to let the world define beauty for her.

The Internet wants to fight about health, obesity, and everything else. This story is more than that.

The modeling industry told Tess she needed to change.

Instead, Tess changed the modeling industry.

That is the true beauty of Tess Munster.
