Lately, I have seen a lot of articles about fast food. How unhealthy it is, how so many people go to eat at McDonald’s, etc. It got me thinking……
Is fast food the reason why I was fat?
Believe it or not, I can smell a burger and tell you if it is from McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s or Crystal. I can look at a french fry and know what establishment it is from.
Yet, I could not tell you what salads they have. I have no idea what salads they have at Burger King. Do they have a Cobb? Most places do.
Restaurants always change their healthy options. They do it with the times. When Atkins was stylish, everyone had an Atkins menu. When “Fat-Free” was big, everyone pumped sugar in items, but they were “Fat-Free”.
They do not change the Big Mac. There is no changing the Burrito Supreme. They do not need to improve on The Whopper.
Why? Because people buy them. They sell. They are not poison, they are delicious!
I guarantee you rarely hear “I can not wait to go to McDonald’s for their Asian Salad!” What you probably hear is “I am so proud! I went to McDonald’s, and I resisted the cheeseburger, so I had an Asian Salad! WOOT!”
I think that society does try to make some sort of accommodations for healthy eaters. There are nutritional information in most restaurants now. Most restaurants are proud they will make items the way you want. Dressing on the side is now mandatory in a lot of places.
The truth is healthy items do not sell very well. When I worked for my former restaurant, I went to the corporate chef with my “Twice Baked Cauliflower” idea. I told him I lot of weight and it would be kind of a cool idea.
He laughed at me. Not in a mean way, but he wanted me to think for a minute. He wanted me to remember how many times we had “healthier items” and how well they sold. They did not. Yet, Lasagna, Chicken Parmesan, and Fettuccine Alfredo flew out of the kitchen.
Coke is a powerhouse. Twinkies sell. The Double Cheeseburger is a value for a buck. We hear how bad they are for us, yet they make money.
And as much as everyone LOVES Subway and their healthy ways, their Meatball Sub is still their number one seller. Always has been and always will be.
I have worked in restaurants for close to fifteen years. I have works in private restaurants and major chains. I have gained a lot of weight while spending 14 hours in a kitchen, and I have lost a lot of weight while spending 14 hours in a kitchen.
I love restaurants. The one I work for now is AWESOME! They take care of their managers and employees.
Is “fast food” the reason why I was fat?
No, I was the reason. I had to change, not wait for the world to change.
Always has been, and always will be.
